Transparent peer review!

Posted by effervescentlibrarian on February 26, 2008

Transparent peer review! This has been going for a while, but keeps gaining momentum in the sciences:

allows for readers to

put in commentary. I think we will see more and more of this in the
future. I see OpenWetWare users starting to
struggle with how to put articles into the wiki/blog structure, and
think that open peer review would work in that
setting very well. Also, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics is using a rapid peer review process.

Openwetware

Posted by effervescentlibrarian on February 21, 2008

I think the biologists and bioengineers have something really amazing going on over at http://openwetware.org/wiki/Main_Page I read in a blog posting today that one author was experimenting with posting an article. I wonder if a "journal" and open access are in the future for this site that is largely coursework and protocols at the moment?

New Discovery

Posted by effervescentlibrarian on February 20, 2008

I’m probably about a year behind on this, but I just discovered Pageflakes, and it has rocked my world!
I’ve been able to gather some of the many things that I check out over the course of a day into one handy start-up page. It would be great if some of the commercial vendors could jump into this with their current contents tools. I could envision having a box with the latest entries from some of the science societies for example. There are a few science journals already providing some content–check it out!

Access to Springer EBooks!

Posted by effervescentlibrarian on February 6, 2008

We have access now to hundreds of Springer ebooks. The cataloging department is working on getting these titles into the library catalog, but until then, here are the direct links to the collection. Such gems as Lecture Notes in Mathematics, and the Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers are included.

This is the direct link to the Mathematics book subject collection http://www.springerlink.com/mathematics-and-statistics/?sortorder=asc&Content+Type=Books
Physics
and Astronomy: http://www.springerlink.com/books/?sortorder=asc&Subject=Physics+and+Astronomy
