Current Awareness Services

Posted by effervescentlibrarian on June 2, 2008

It is possible to monitor important journals as they are published.
Many publishers provide access to journal tables-of-contents or
alerting services. Typically, these are free services, although you
have to register first and you are limited to the titles and fields
covered by that publisher. Some of these publishers also allow you to
receive alerts based on keywords. Hundreds of publishers provide these
services in all discliplines, so check individual publisher web sites
for specific journals not covered by the services listed below.

Publishers with Alerting Services:
American Chemical Society
Scitation Alerts from AIP
American Mathematical Society
American Physical Society
BioMed Central
Cambridge University Press Journals
Highwire Press
Institute of Physics
Open Access Now
Royal Society of Chemistry
Science (Journal)
Taylor & Francis
World Scientific

  • INSPEC  Create
up to 125 weekly Email Alerts from the Search History. A Personal Account
is required to set up email alerts. From the
top of any Engineering Village page, click Search History. Select the
box next to the search you wish to set up as an alert. If you are not
already logged into your Personal Account, you will be prompted to do
so. If you are not registered for a Personal Account, you will be asked
if you want to register now. (See instructions for registering for a Personal
    Account).

    You can also
set up Email Alerts from the Saved Searches page if you are logged into
    your Personal Account.

    Email alerts
can also be setup by clicking the Create email link near each search statement
in Easy, Quick, Expert or Thesaurus Search.

    Up to 25
records are sent within an email alert. If more records were retrieved
from the weekly update, a hyperlink appears in the body of the email alert
linking you to Engineering Village. The full update retrieval set will
appear when you click on the link. You can also link from email alerts
to individual records by clicking an Abstract or Detailed Record hyperlink.

  • Scopus  You can receive e-mail notices when new documents are loaded on
Scopus that match a specific search query or that cite specific
    documents or authors.

From the My Alerts page, you can view the Latest Results for an alert, edit alerts, and delete alerts.

Note: Non-Scopus documents (abstracts available on platforms external to Scopus) and citations derived from Scopus references are not included in alerts.

The following kinds of alerts are available:

  • Search Alerts:  Search alerts notify you by e-mail when new documents that match a specified search query are loaded on Scopus.

A Search Alert can be created from the Search History page, the Search Results page, and the My Profile page. Search alerts can also be saved from within the Saved Searches page, which is accessed from the My Profile page.

  • Document Citation Alerts:  Document citation alerts notify you by e-mail when new documents are loaded on Scopus that cite a specific document.

A Document Citation Alert may be created from the Record page and the My Alerts page.

  • Author Citation Alerts: Author Citation alerts notify you by e-mail when an author or group of matched authors is cited on Scopus. An Author Citation Alert can be created from an Author Details page and from
    Author Cited By search results.

Tip: You can also have new citations for your Search or Document Citation Alert sent to you as an RSS feed.
Click RSS
to create an RSS feed when a document is cited by another document in
Scopus or when newly loaded documents in Scopus match a search query.

It’s getting harder and harder to keep up!

Posted by effervescentlibrarian on June 2, 2008

I am currently helping a digital humanities guru (Lisa Spiro) on a new pet project: http://digitalresearchtools.pbwiki.com.  I'm trying not to be too science-focused, and keep things a bit general. But, I have to say–Whew! I am in the process of adding a page there about keeping current on research, and I'm amazed at how so many more journals/publishers are offering free table of contents services and alerts. There seems to be no one-stop shopping place–you almost have to go to each publisher website, and see what they are offering. Am I missing something here? It seems so complicated. Can some programmer please come up with an RSS harvester that gets me the content that I need?
